Reluctantly up to date...
Today we arrived back home from the midwest. One of the tasks that I set for myself this weekend was to get my linux machine back in good working order... it had some corrupt filesystems when it was abruptly shutdown due to a power supply fire. I had to boot to a rescue CD so that I could fsck the drives. Once I had done that I decided to emerge and update the portage tree. When I did that I got a wonderfull note that the profile of gentoo that I was using was deprecated and that I needed to update to a more recent one, which I did... now I'm busy waiting for it to complete an emerge system to catch the various updates that are needed in a system that is infrequently updated.
As a general rule, I don't tinker with the system unless I need too... It's the CVS repository for my business and also a core piece of my local infrastructure- it provides a great deal of storage. My general experience as a Software Engineer is "don't tinker with things that already work well." A maxim I try to apply to my daily routine. This does not, of course, apply to code that I write because I can always do a better job there, but when it comes to system configuration it's a golden rule.
